Hello,
I am trying to convert an HD x264 file in an mkv container to an avi container. I have installed the cccp and can watch the video on my computer. I can convert to HD1080 divx using dr divx but it takes about 8 hours on my machine, I tried that and it does work and streams to my DSM-520 and looks great. I am hoping the DSM-750 is released soon which has x264 support.
Ok to my problem:
I try to open in virtualdubmod but it says parsing file and then gives an error and says it must close. I have read tutorials on this site that state if you can get Vdubmod to open the file you can then save as an avi with no conversion using direct stream copy.
I also tried mkvextractgui and it extracts the audio but won't seam to extract the video.
Anyone have luck doing this?
I don't understand the reason for using this mkv? Why not just avi which is supported by so many more progs.

I agree but I have access to HD movies stored in MKV. I can convert them to divx with dr divx and it does look great but just takes about 8 hours for a two hour movie, and that's one at 2.35.1 aspect. Of course, if it was at 1.78.1 it would take more, larger frames, etc.
What I'm looking to do is just change the container, i.e. if i could open in virtualdubmod i would save as an avi using direct stream copy. The D-link DSM-750, which is soon to be released uses draft-n and supports x264 and VC-1. I'm not sure if it will support mkv though. Hopefully. -
You can try use avc2avi, http://www.google.se/search?q=avc2avi&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:eek...ient=firefox-a . Demux the x264 from the video with mkvextractgui.
But AVC/H264 in avi is not that good, new container formats like mkv,mp4 has much better support for it.
And build an HTPC if you want to play everything...or just stop download mkv... -
It has to be vfw avc to open in vdubmod.
Yeah you can go to avi with avc2avi.
But I can't think of any reason to.
Avi is old, and avc is new and not meant to fit in avi.
Don't expect compatibility just because it's in the avi container. In fact expect the opposite.
If you're going to switch containers your best bet is to go to mp4.
Extract to h264 and use mp4box to mux.
Mkvextractgui should extract it...
There are other options, try Avimux-gui.
In any case your hd divx solution is a good one.
8 hours is not too bad.
You could always try other conversion methods.

The reason for mkv would be because the file uses AC3 audio. mkv allows for native AVC video and AC3 audio. Guess you could also use a TS container, but there would be higher overheads.
If I was making a SAP with AVC playback support, then supporting it in an avi container would be last on my list (actually it wouldn't be on my list at all).
If the audio is AC3, then you would need to re-encode to aac before remuxing to mp4, although I believe that Ahead/Nero have plans to store AC3 as private streams in mp4's. So any player that is Nero Digital AVC certified should be able to handle it eventually. -
Vifa 84 You may have a problem with lack of resources, sorry, don't know the details of your PC. But I am running a core duo at 300Mhz and with 3000G of RAM, just used Dr DivX (thanks guys for the tip on that one) to convert a MKV file and the result in les than an hour was excellent.
I had been going nuts with this MKV crap till I found Dr DivX. Just hope it works with all MKV files.
Well, there is the answer I guess. I DOESN'T work will all MKV files. Already found two that didn't work.
