  1. Hi

I seem (according to virtualdub) have lots of codecs that are not official ?!! How to I keep track of them (ie see them) and remove ones I dont want etc. Virtual Dub says many of these hacked versions will cause lots of errors etc...I dont even know how I got them!!!!

    Any help folks?

    Hello--

DivX is a hacked codec--it is a workaround of the Micro$oft mpeg-4 ASF bitrate limitation. Before DivX, one had to save mpeg-4 video as .asf at bitrates of 256Kbps or less. DivX uses .avi as the file extension and allows bitrates of up to 6000kbps. So, don't freak out--Virtual Dub will say that about DivX and SMR. The only two DivX codecs you'll need are 3.11 and 4.12 (the latter is supposedly being used on newer movies, but since I haven't downloaded a movie in eons , I can't verify that). 4.12 is supposed to be backwards-compatible, but I had problems opening old 3.11 encodes with it, so I installed 3.11 and 4.12 to be safe.

Thanks I get it now. I think I must have downloaded a codec pack lots of diff versions.

I still get a error with TMPGE tho only when I convert (try to) divx to mpeg. I get the error "Read error occured at address 00402f78 od module TMPENC.EXE with B80000B4.". All other formats convert ok and I can play the divx files I am trying to convert quite happly... any ideas anyone?

    Thanks in advance

I am glad I am ot the only one having that problem with converting with TMPGenc.

I have been reading through today and it seams as version 2.02 may work better, or the latest 2.52 but I may be wrong as I haven't tried it myself yet.
