This player appears to be a good one. How does one adjust the brightness, etc controls. I found them but they seem to be locked(not working).

First calibrate your graphics card's video output from its setup applet. For you, the Nvidia Control Panel -> Video and Television -> Adjust Video Color Settings.
Then, some of the individual video decoders in MPCHC have video proc amp settings. For example, you can right click on the video window while playing an MPG file and select Filters -> MPEG2 Video Decoder and adjust from there.
Some output drivers have their own proc amp controls too. View -> Options -> Miscellaneous has proc amp controls for the VMR9 output driver (if you are using VMR9).
Select output drivers via View -> Options -> Playback -> Output. You have to exit MPCHC and restart for this change to take place. -
