I'm not 100% sure if that's the reason they look so bad, but my vobsubs looks horrible when I play them with the encoded video file. They look much, much better on my DVD.

I noticed the vobsubs change in VLC when I change the AR there, so I assume it matters what AR is has? So when I crop the video, the AR changes and the vobsubs get squeezed, right? If so, how can I "crop" the vobsubs so that they will look as good when played back on the xvid as on the DVD?

I want to keep the files as .idx/.sub, not convert to .srt or something.

I know my topic hasn't been here that long, but judging by the views several people has seen it. I might be wrong, since no one has replied, so I'm going to clarify on my problem here.

The problem is when someone rip and encode a movie, they (usually) crop the video to remove the black edges. Which will result in a different AR (not necessarily on the movie itself, but the video (including black edges) will have a different AR.

When I rip the vobsubs however, the vobsub images will have the original AR, or am I wrong here? It is an image of the entire screen with transparent background, right? If so, then the vobsub images will get squeezed when viewed with a video that has cropped the black edges?

I simply want to rip vobsubs AND use them. People use vobsubs all the time so it can't be hard. People here MUST know how to use vobsubs on an encoded video.
