Recently I experienced a problem trying to start Peachtree Accounting in Win2k SP4, and error was given that said "The application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Searching Microsoft site I found a work around at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823485/, but near the bottom of that page it states status is that it's a known problem in Win2k SP4. This Microsoft search results states "on a terminal server" while mine is just a standalone PC, but it's the only results I found that comes close to matching my exact problem. The work around didn't work for me, and the only way I could fix it was to restore a Ghost image created before the problem arose.

I also found some Google search results where others experienced this problem and were unable to find a solution. Does anybody know whether the problem may be fixed by upgrade to WinXP, and has anyone else had a similar problem?

  2. That's a really generic error message that does not help at all. Terminal Server issues should be completely different from what you are encountering.

It would help to have more information on the error message, frequency, operations involved, Peachtree version, dot NET version, recent updates to PC, Windows, Peachtree, or any other program, etc., etc.

Updating to XP may very well help, shouldn't hurt at all, unless you have a very old version of Peachtree.

Also, check the Peachtree website for the error.

Look for the error in the EVENT VIEWER. You should get a better description of the error there.

    bevills1,
If you need a retail copy of Windows XP, I have one that I need to sell. I purchased Windows XP Home Edition SP2 32-bit retail CD from amazon.com last week so that I could downgrade Vista to XP. I've decided to stick with Vista because I found out that some software and a device were compatible afterall. Now I am stuck with XP retail CD that I purchased from amazon.com for $173 (now $188). This CD has not been used. I opened the packaging so instead of sending it back to amazon I am selling it on eBay. It is currently $110 on eBay (item number 270349288378).

It's Peachtree Accounting 2008 by Sage Software, and the error would occur every time I tried to launch Peachtree Accounting. It suddenly began about 3 weeks ago after working with no problems for about 3 months. The error isn't found at the Peachtree website.

However, the problem was remedied by restoring a Ghost image as stated in the last statement of the first paragraph in my initial post. I was hoping to avoid upgrade to WinXP, but I may have to if the problem recurs.

Win2K Pro does have an update Rollup which came after SP4. It may be worth the effort to install it, but I doubt it'll solve your problem. But then who knows?

  7. It is not easy to answer your question without testing. However this type of error occur when the program needs a module dll or something and it is missing. Sometimes updates removes or replace certain libraries which could be the cause. When you restore it works OK so what happens in between, windows update happens? you install a program after that? Does it have a dongle? maybe the dongle driver is not installed ... check the error reports in computer management look what happened just prior to the error.
win2k and XP they are NT family, so it should work.
