I'm trying to get my head around why ffdshow refuses to play .m4v files. I've enabled the H.264 codec (on by default), I've used the "fix all problems" button on Filmerit, and I've even bumped up the Merit of ffdshow to prefered. Nothing seems to get the files recognized by WMP11. It's not even attempting to load ffdshow when it tries to play them. I've set up ffdshow to prompt whenever an application tries to load an ffdshow filter, and I get no popup on .m4v files.

Now the wierd part is MPEG2 (DVDs) work without a hitch. Can't make heads or tails of it.

Does anyone know how to delete all codecs and start from scratch without reformatting windows?

Yeah. Do you have Haali Media Splitter installed? If not, I'd certainly recommend it.

Does WMP see the video differently if you change the extension from .m4v to .mp4?

You probably already have ffdshow set to allow WMP, so it's not going to generate that popup.

Haali did the trick. Wish I would have figured that out before I gutted my system.

I'd think ffdshow might mention that somewhere.

Ohh Well.. Thanks again... back in business.
