  2. real alternative works for me for wmp / mpc

test it out on mpc, if it doesn't work, try re-installing it

are you sure the videos are not corrupted?

  6. Make sure only 1 player is active at 1 time or you get overlay issues (i.e. close all other media players)

another thing i tried playing 5 or 6 rmvb or rm files.. i could play at least 2 or 3 with WMP but the others dont work with WMP only. (all can be played with MPC)

    i got messages like

Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help.

    or

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

actually before i had this problem i had MEGA K-Lite Codec and could play everything but alot of people said codec packs were no good and i uninstalled it and i reinstalled real alternative... now i have this problem

  8. If k-lite was working fine for you before, then consider re-installing it

But beware, codec packs can cause lots of problems

Why do you want WMP? It is bloated and adds no functionality over mpc

actually i too like MPC but i can't get MPC to http stream .avi files...

it says "Opening..." and is stuck there forever..

i tried streaming the same avi file with WMP:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IDAUJF50

and it worked... so thats why i am using WMP... if i can fix the problem in MPC i would like to fix it

Let me repeat what I posted in your cross-post of this issue

You are trying to stream a non-streaming format from a non-streaming site - why would you expect it to work consistently ?

VLC is by far the best player for viewing incomplete or partially downloaded avi files. That is essentially what you are trying to do in this case.

MPC is not doing what you want because you are trying to do something silly, and MPC isn't designed to do it.

If I want to use closed captions, MPC and VLC can't display them, but WMP can. PowerDVD 5 does as well, but mixes in any other data that my DVD recorder captured in addition to line 21 closed captions, resulting in garbled text. So WMP is not entirely redundant for some of us, though I do agree it isn't the best choice for what the OP wants to do.

Set ffdshow to decode mpeg2, checkmark dvd decoding, checkmark the "subtitles" category, checkmark "decode closed captions"

    Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'll pass. I don't want to clutter my system with more codecs that I won't use, and install a piece of software my antivirus won't like, just to add functionality to MPC that WMP already has.

I only use a software player for watching DVDs. I tried MPC and VLC, and for that, I didn't find them any more useful the two software players I already had. For one thing VLC is less tolerant of disc read errors than either WMP or PowerDVD 5. (I get those sometimes when the spindle on my DVD recorder needs a good cleaning.)
