    YUY2 is a colourspace, not a codec

What is the source of the video ?

Can you play the video in Quicktime ?

Hacked copies of Adobe Premiere are known to have import errors, so if you've not using a licensed copy, this would be your problem. Almost anytime I see Premiere complaints or problems, it tends to be due to using pirated versions, instead of the legitimate copies. Most licensed Adobe owners post questions on the Adobe support forums, or a few other places, if they need help.

Try Perian as a general codec boost and videospec to see what you may actually need

You still have not said what the source of the video is, however if it is a downloaded Divx/Xvid file then Premiere probably won't like it anyway. Divx/Xvid is not designed for editing, and real editing tend not to like working with it.

I would try AVIDemux, which will do basic assemble editing and handles many common formats without the need for extra codecs.

Try using MediaInfo (the Mac version) to get more information on the video and audio codecs used in the AVI, and post the information here. Alternatively, you can use VLC to get information on the video. If you have VLC and/or any version of mplayer installed, can you play the video without any problems?

YUY2 correspond to a raw video format and MediaInfo Mac will not give more infos about the file than VideoSpec as this one uses MediaInfo too.
    see for example http://www.fourcc.org/fccyuy2.php

Actually, I meant post all or most of MediaInfo's report here.

If you just want to convert the video, an alternative might be to see if it opens in VLC - VLC has the ability to transcode videos to other formats. Also, if anything that uses mplayer has no problems viewing it, mencoder (and anything that uses it, such as ffmpegx) will probably be able to convert it as well.
