  1. so i d/l some mp4 files not realizing they have some crap ass windows only codec, the files are barely playable with VLC as the sound is horribly out of sync..is there anything for 10.4.11 that will help me play or even convert to something usable?

    Which codec? Frankly, I wouldn't install a codec pack (=mega-pack of Quicktime components) on a Mac anymore than I would under Windows. (With the exception of Perian, of course.)

    You can try using VLC's own transcoding features, but as VLC seems to be having some problems with it, that might have the same results. Have you tried using any of the mplayer variants (to play), or mencoder (to convert)? You might also give Handbrake and ffmpegx a try.
    If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

    If you think you have problems now, as the saying goes, "you ain't seen nothin' yet" if you think a codec pack will fix anything. Have you considered the video is simply crap? You have no idea if the video you downloaded is good or not. You're making bad assumptions, and you're willing to hose your computer in the process?

    Installing a whole codec pack is about the same as installing about twenty programs, selected totally at random, and hoping you won't have any problems.
