I recently bought a dvd writer (LG 22x Internel Super Multi DVD Writer). Everytime i burn a movie and play it on my dvd player, after every 5 - 10 minutes, it keeps on stuttering, and then i have to pause it and play it again, and it can get kind of annoying, i know there is nothing wrong as i burned a movie once which was perfect, no problems whatsoever, what mistake am i making? Before I used to use nero 6, then imgburn and i've even tried to copy a stuttering movie (which i burned onto a cheap disk to a maxell dvd-r disk) using dvd decrypter but still no difference. First i thought it was cheap disks, so i switched to maxell dvd-r which cost me. Before i got my dvd writer i used to make vcd's which were perfect, so i don't know what the problem is! I've looked on every forum I can find but i've not been able to come up with a solution, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

You haven't said what format the movies are in, so I will assume DVD Video. In which case, are you converting them yourself ? If so, which what ? If the bitrate is too high you can get this type of problem. Of course it could also be that the player is dying. Do the same discs do this in other players ?

What is your burn speed? What is the media code? Have you attempted to burn at a much lower speed (i.e. 8X or 4X) and still see the problem? Download NERO CDspeed http://www.cdspeed2000.com/ and check the media code of the disc (if your drive is compatible). Look to the left of the page and look up the excellent Maxell media that you are using to ensure it isn't crap. I recently checked a Sony blank provided by a friend: RiData = Crap.

There are many possible causes. To name a few: burner, media, software, wetware (inside one's cranium)...

Do the source files play correctly?
Once you've burned a stuttering disc, does the stuttering occur at the same points in a given disc? If yes, then that indicates a media/burn issue. If no, then perhaps the player is at issue.
I've used Maxell discs in the long past, and was not too happy. Maybe you're actually seeing the results of dodgy media. Or maybe you're touching the active surface of the blank discs (an absolute no-no prior to burning; might be more ok after burning). Never, ever touch that surface, or your burns will be lousy, if they complete at all.

Here's what I recommend: Get some top-shelf media. Taiyo-Yuden and Verbatim are most often mentioned here. If even they produce poor results, then the burning process itself is more likely the culprit (or your player is dying; easy to check with other, eg. commercial, discs). Either the burner has started going south on you (how many "laser miles" on the odometer?), or your computer's speed is marginal (perhaps because you are allowing other processes to compete with the burning software for attention). Disable all networking (wireless especially), shut down background processes, close your browsers, etc. etc. Burn one or two notches below the lower of the maximum burner or disc speed rating.

  8. In addition to previous suggestions:

It isn't an issue for most folks, but I have to use a lens cleaning disc on my set-top every month or so. Two reasons, maybe three: I smoke, I have a wood/coal stove, and several cats (cat dander?). Anyway, you could try it.

Just to repeat: Try playing the discs on another player, if they play okay, you need a new one.

Run a disc quality test using Nero's DVDSpeed and a surface scan on a glitchy disc, to verify that the burns are bad. Also, your burner isn't listed, a firmware upgrade may be in order.

    Good luck.

You could also try a Transfer Rate test and hope for a fairly clean line (it doesn't have to be this perfect).
