AVG trouble

i started having trouble with my avg lately. i have the paid version. my avg keeps on saying that the anti-spam is disabled but i never change any settings to disable it. also when you update it always says that there is no new updates even though i know there should be and it never updates by itself. it says that you need to up date about every hour even if i change the setting to update once a day. any suggestion on how to fix this.

Update ever hour is ridiculous.

A: Ccleaner (garbage out)
B: Try malwarebytes > http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (seek and remove)
C: Hijackthis (Chase out non-existant files, be mindful of any listed "nameservers")
D: Winsockfix > http://majorgeeks.com/download4372.html
E: Reset windows firewall defaults > http://www.winxptutor.com/sp2/resetfw.htm

If you have any other secondary firewall, antispyware products running, disable those to test avg's ability to connect for updates.
