AVG screws the pooch again

On Tuesday an update for AVG 8 suggested that a Windows system file is a Trojan horse, and users who delete the file form the system could leave their Windows XP systems endlessly rebooting or unable to reboot at all.

Others swear by it, but I've tried the free version of AVG 8 several times and have always experienced either a severe system slowdown, an unexpected conflict with other software, or both.
No thanks; I'll stick with either Avast (free) or the free version of Avira. According to most independent tests, they have superior detection capability and neither has ever conflicted with other software in any of my installs. -
Well I've always been a norton person. I've used it since you could only buy 3 1/2 inch floppy disk (edit I typed disk with a "c" but i guess technically for the floppy it should be disk with a "k").
I've tried some of them but I am just more comfortable with Norton.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I do lots of service calls and nortons causes many problems,i remove nortons and install avast and the only time i get called back is to renew the subscription.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
i'm with yoda. norton for at least the last 10 years. systemworks. has some really nice apps included.
avg 8 is not very good. i tried it on a secondary system and it was infected with trojans within a month. the impossible to remove/format/re-install windows type. that kind of crap never happens with norton.
the only norton version i tried and disliked was the norton "360" package, it was too intrusive and restrictive.--

Although it's not my first choice for a computer security application, I'm running NIS 2009 on one of my installs and like it very much. A close friend is currently using their Corporate Endpoint Security and absolutely loves it. For the last four years, Norton's products have progressively improved and for that they should be commended. Norton is one of those companies that "woke up" and listened to their users, a lesson AVG, Trend Micro, and McAfee (among others) should emulate but probably won't.
I try lots of security software and have found some pleasant surprises as well as some real losers. I absolutely prefer freeware, but NIS 2009 is one I liked so much I bought it and I think it's a great choice for anyone who prefers a something close to a "set and forget" security solution. -
I now use Avira and ClamWin (for Outlook)

only reason for a slow down with avg 8.0 is you need to disable link scanner and resident shield. i believe it was LS who mentioned this in another thread a while back.

I keep all my data on a physically separate HD so I only needed to reload my programs. Until I read this thread I was blaming my "crash" on Torrent I downloaded just before the crash. -
I guess AVG screwed wulf109 too

not if he is in the U.S. only Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish versions caused the crashes in winXP.

I had to dump AVG because it kept insisting my GoldWave was a virus, and it would auto-delete without asking me, even though the auto-delete feature was not turned on. I was pissed.
