I'd like to save a streaming WMV from a news site to my hard drive. The only thing is, it is a DAT file in the Temporary Internet Files directory and GSPOT does not recognize it. Is there a way to convert this to a usable format or is there another way of saving it (even as a WMV) to my hard drive for later viewing? (In case they pull the video). I'd like my family to see it, but the links might not go through or be broken. Please don't ban me. It's a legitimate question, and I don't know if it's on your 'do not ask' list... paj692

If it's a streaming WMV file, it may be DRM encrypted and not possible to save or convert. I don't know why it would show as a .dat file, as that is normally part of a VCD file. You could look here for saving streaming video: https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=39#39

If it really is a .dat file, try changing the extension to .wmv or .mpg and see if you can play it or Gspot can see anything there, but I doubt it.

    And welcome to our forums.

paj692, I have the same problem as you do. The streaming videos I'm watching are 40+ MBs and some of the tools I tried to use to capture the streaming videos disconnect prematurely.

Therefore, I went into my Temp. Internet Files directory and saw that there are data files (.dat) that are the same size as the streaming videos! So, I tried playing it. But it didn't work.

I tried changing the extension to .wmv / .asf / .mpg but they don't work. Please someone help.

  4. You can record the video with screen capture software even if it is DRM protected.

I use Replay Screencast from Applian Technologies.

jonas more, thanks a lot mate. I haven't tried the Replay Screencast, but I'll post a message after I try using it.

By the way, does your "jonas" refer in any way to Jonas Bjorkman who's a Swedish tennis professional?

Actually my real name is Anthony Angel... Jonas More was a character in a movie I enjoyed some time ago... it isn't a reference to Jonas Bjorkman.

  7. Has anybody found a way to do this yet? I tried the software that was posted but it only records the audio. It records everything that is on my screen EXCEPT the video. That little screen in the middle of WMP is black. It's a video from the MSN site. It plays back fine from my Temporary Internet Files folder but when I try to copy it to another location it's a no go. Ah, Bill, you sly devil...

Ive Seen these files, and have watched some good videos that were in these Files one is here: http://cu.convio.net/site/PageServer?pagename=Rx_song_download
the quicktime one i think works, i put it on my video ipod but the WMP version is protected with those streaming WMV leaved dat files the framerate is excellent better than the QT version so is the quality, I also found a FLV version on another site that was clear but it wouldnt convert for me with riva flv encoder to mpeg then to mpeg 4 with jodix free ipod video converter,
one thing about those WMV DAT files is if you try to download them with stream down you get no sound, simple but effective DRM, i wish i could upload a picture to this forum so i could show yall

nope no go this one doesnt even play, animatebb2.wmv is really animatebb2.wmv#0;1 its the #0;1 that does it the site puts that code into the file as its sent so its protected and files change anyway when u take them out of temp internet files. to captain satellite: you are correct i just tried this i even tried putting in everything from the location from WMP but it just hung up stream down and the server couldnt find the video here is the full location info from WMP: mms://wm.newmediamill.speedera.net/wm.newmediamill/animatebb2.wmv#0;1.000;0;0;1:2;4:2

and the filename in temp internet files is animatebb2.wmv#0;1
and the cache name is animatebb2[1].dat

This MIGHT work to save some streaming files. No guarantees, but it has worked for me.

Download and install the Firefox browser at
    http://www.getfirefox.com
Then at the same site, go to Add-Ons and then select Firefox Add-Ons. Install the VideoDownloader add-on and it may enable you to save a copy of the streaming media file on your PC. As redwudz warned, if it's not DRM encoded, you should be able to play it back after saving it.

I just saw a cute video at "http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=136710" and ran into the same situation. After some research the only solution I have found is a product WM Recorder (wmrecorder.com). I downloaded the trial version and was able to record/playback the clip, but unable to save a local version - it appears that the product just manages the links to the stream, not the actual file itself. I'm able to accomplish the same thing by double-clicking the file name in the Temporary Internet Files folder. I think the previous posts are correct in stating because this is encrypted/copyrighted material it's next to impossible to record a local copy - which is the whole point anyway

Boy do I feel silly - I just uninstalled above mentioned trial software, checked the Program Files folder where the program was... and guess what I found..! A folder called "Recordings" containing standalone WMV files of the streams I experimented with. I stand corrected - WM Recorder did the job.

Hey whats up allm has anyone ever been to the encarta site, well if you go there and listen to any audio clips, i know this isnt video related but dont ban me or remove this because this is the same situation as the video files like this the audio clips that are streamed on that site are DAT files as well but they are .WMA files, the clip i was listening to was a chipmunk's chirp but audio is alot easier to capture than video all you need to do is record it off your soundcard as it plays, viola you have a local copy that plays,

this program might work, FRAPS, its a program used to recording videos of PC games and stuff from your pc, if configured right you can prob make a local copy of the protected videos your trying to save. I dont have this program i just saw it used in alot of youtube videos oh and the URL for the FRAPS program yup you guessed it www.fraps.com this prog isnt a freeware prog it costs money how much im not sure see the website for more details NOTE: IM NOT ADVERTISING JUST OFFERING UP A POSSIBLE WAY TO RECORD STREAMING WMV VIDEOS

Attached is a picture of one of these files in the temp. internet files folder this video is the animate2bb.wmv video (its that funny "The Drugs I Need" video, link is in one of my earlier posts, dont ask me why that copy is protected this video is all over the net and on youtube so its easy to find a decent looking copy of it, i hope this is ok that i put this pic on here its only 5.05 kb so its not big at all. yeah i finally uploaded a pic of this to this forum, was i missing something or just too damn lazy to do it, or the site hasnt implemented pic attachments back when i first posted, oh well take care all and good luck on the videos

hey all I might have found a prog like Fraps to save those streaming WMV leaved dat files google CamStudio and its the first one on the list download and install this free program and it will do what fraps does well i sucessfully recorded one of these un savable videos to an AVI file it wasnt that good quality but it worked, maybe it was the quality of the source video, the avi files are large so make sure you have enough disk space and after you record your video you can use SUPER or your favorite video conversion program I hope this helps
