    Hi,

I have just subsribed to a new internet out here (Itel) and am using a router with them.
I don't like routers 1 bit it's frustrating having to do all this port business all the time and losing settings etc etc.
I have mailed Itel about 13 times and it seems they are avoiding my question for some reason :S
Ideally i wouldl ike to connect to the net the way i did in the UK with BT Internet using a normal ADSL USB Modem which was direct and didn't EVER have to bother with all this port business.
Is it possible to get a Normal Standard ADSL USB Modem and connect it up and it would work with this Itel provider or would i have to get a confiugured one off them?
I have looked at theirs but they have nothing but routers.
    I hate them!
But thats only cos i dont know how to congif them and cant be bothered for the hassle, plus im not sharing this connection either so no need for one at all.
    Please let me know.

    Cheers.

Its a combo (modem/router) ... if it were a plain router, you wouldn't even be able to connect to isp.

Any adsl modem will work, just remember to setup user name and password in unit, save, reboot modem, and go.

Even what appears to be a brand new modem can be defective out of the box ... it sounds like a firmware issue or heat related ... check with adsl modem manufacturer for firmware update ... if available, apply firmware update and assess for remaining issue's ... if no firmware update available, contact isp and request replacement.

If you have another adsl modem you have used before, which has never had issue's, set it up, and shove the isp's unit back in it's box, and request replacement.

Now if request is ignored by isp more than three times, contact local fair trading department, and possibly local state communications onbudsman ... which should get isp's attention.

The problem with the DSL modems is they can be hard coded or something cant they? (to only work with like say bigpond or whatever) So i just need to buy one that isnt hard coded right?

Thanks very much for your help mate.
    Appreciated.

There shouldn't be anything to configure. They should provide the basic setup without any need for you to make changes. If it doesn't work, then get them to fix/replace it. What specific problem are you having?

Actually, most "easy hookup" dsl and cable modems are identified by their mac addresses (specifically for th isp).

UNLESS you have a username/password combo, then you can use any modem without having the isp reconfigure their system.
