I'm trying to burn some .avi files on my MacBook to DVD to play on my TV (I have a Sony DVP-C660 DVD player). They all play in Quicktime, so I have the right codecs. I've tried just burning with the DVD-Video tab in Popcorn, and even making a disk image, ripping it using MacTheRipper, and burning using the Video_TS tab, but no matter what I try, my DVD player comes up with "Playback prohibited by area limitations." How do I fix this, or, how do I burn .avi files to a DVD so they'll play on my TV?

When Sony says "Playback Prohibited By Area Limitations" is is usually telling you that you are trying to play PAL video in an NTSC only player. PCs (even Macs) do not have a PAL/NTSC problem. Either get a better player (but them you might also have to change your TV as well) or convert the video to NTSC (should be an option in your conversion program) and live the fact it will probably be jerky during pans and zooms.

How can I convert to NTSC in Popcorn? (I'm a total tech noob haha)

I have no idea - I don't have a Mac. You would be looking for a field marked Format or TV Format, with PAL, NTSC and/or Auto as the options. If you can't find it then you may have to resort to - gasp ! shock ! horror ! - reading the help files.

Where do you live? I see in your title USA you DO live in the US right? its possible either your player is another region OR your mac drive is "set" to a different region. ??
Most dvd players will internally take care of pal or ntsc anymore you should not have that as a problem unless you have an oddball DVD player. I would try ripping a movie that already works in the dvd player.
rip 10 minutes of it. convert to AVI. then run it through the exact steps you use for the first DVD and see what happens.
If it fails to play then you know the "software" is doing something goofy and not making a compatible disk. -

Does the burned disc play on your Mac using DVD Player? What are the other specs that Popcorn reports for the video? What brand of discs are you using? -

enable checkboxes 1 to 6, disable 7&8
save
your area is now compatible
PS: if the message ("Playback prohibited by area limitations.") was exact (and not a generic message whitout any meaning), this setting will correct it
