  1. Is there some software that will capture from a firewire/dv source (VHS source through a clamshell) straight to divx/mpeg-4?

I've been trying AVS CaptureWizard, but none of the options produce a usable AVI except a regular DV-AVI. Divx or MPG4 or MPG2 all look like the picture is out of sync, everything is skewed and low-res..

I'm trying to eliminate the capture/encode process, as I have a lot of VHS cartoons I just want to put on a hard drive and then store the VHS tapes in the attic.

On the fly encoding is pretty CPU intensive, so without knowing your system specs (you can fill them out in your profile) I can only guess no.

Capturing direct to DivX or Xvid is not advisible.

Your best bet is to get a stand alone DVD recorder and record direct to MPEG-2 DVD or you can buy a capture card for your computer that does the same thing ... it will capture direct to MPEG-2 DVD spec with the card doing all the work (like a DVD player but on a PCI card).

  4. Hi. I'm an idiot.

After reading your posts, I realized I have a Hauppauge PCI TV/Capture card installed in the machine.. I hooked the VCR up to the inputs and am capturing now. So far, so good!

I always just capture to DV-AVI and encode to whatever I want from there in Vegas..

BTW, IMHO VHS is the absolutely worst, most horrible format ever invented. The only redeeming value is the tape case: it keeps my kids from destroying the video much better than DVDs.
