Depends always on the REAL codec, size, res and bitrates used.

Many people, especially for some reason I can't figure out you UK people, are just completely obsessed with using your HDTVs as playback devices. As guns1inger points out, there are no guarantees. TVs are much more restrictive about what they will support than dedicated media players or even DVD or BluRay players. For example, I don't think any TVs support DTS playback at this time. It could be a size issue with the file. It could be a bad spot in the video that just makes the decoder fall over and die. If you want something that RELIABLY plays various files you download, an HDTV is not your solution. If you want the convenience of not having to buy another device, that is your choice, but then you have to just accept that some or maybe many downloaded files won't play correctly or at all on an HDTV.
If you really must play this file on your TV, you could always try re-encoding it to a smaller size with Divx or Xvid. -
