  1. When I try to convert an AVI file to h.264 using the iPhone preset, all it gives me is white video with the soundtrack.
I'm running a brand new mac with Leopard. I have tried this with multiple AVI's and they are all playable in VLC before conversion but after they get all screwed up. I just converted a short youtube video that was already in an iPod playable format and it worked nicely using the iPod preset.
    What is wrong? Please help.

  2. I just used the 3GP preset and it came out good.

Chances are that these AVI source files do not display the video in your current setup of QuickTime Player either. By default, the iPhone preset uses QuickTime to read ("decode") the source file. It is an option (checkbox) in the Options tab.
    - You could de-select "Decode with Quicktime" to make ffmpegX use ffmpeg for decoding.
    or
    - You could add a component to QuickTime to help it decode more kinds of video. Then ffmpegX will be able to convert your source video while using QuickTime for decoding. The developer suggests (product requirements) 3ivX or DivX. Perian will also help QuickTime decode DivX/XviD, as well as many other codecs and features. One of these three will do.

VLC plays just about anything, so that doesn't mean a lot when it comes to compatibility with other conversion apps, such as ffmpegX.

By default, the 3GP preset doesn't use QuickTime to decode the source file, but it uses ffmpeg to decode it.

  4. Thank you very much.
