With some laptops you have to enable the wireless adapter by physically turning it on (look for a button or check your manual)
In XP then you would: start button => connect to => wireless network connection -
Just to add, when you get to the wireless network connection, you should see all available wireless networks, and whether they are open for you to access. If you can't get into any open ones, you may have to check your wireless adapter settings. If it's set for DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) automatically, it should see them all.
Vista can be a little harder to set up, but there are 'wizards' and plenty of help for networking problems built into most operating systems. JMO, but I would be careful not to store passwords, bank or other sensitive info on a computer that will access unknown networks. I would also advise not to do banking or other financial transactions over that type of network most times. At least until you are sure you have a secure connection.
