  1. Forgive me if this is not the right place for this, I just know this site has been a help to me in the past. For the past year or so, I've been ripping CD's with EAC according to the guide set out at chrismyden.com. Anyway, now with a new CD (the new Coldplay) I can't get beyond ripping track 2, and as it is, when I put the CD in my computer, the CD drive starts spinning rapidly and loudly (which doesn't happen with any other discs) and locks up my computer (I had to turn AutoPlay off). I exchanged the disc from Amazon once already but it made no difference. Is there another way I can rip this? Could this CD have some new copy protection that screws things up like this?

As I donīt like Coldplay - havenīt tried.
But, as almost all "donīt-name-this-bad-guys-here" are all full with this Cd and Rips, starting with MP3 to Flac or ape.... canīt be very difficult.
And all the "bad-guys" are using EAC - still the best.

There could be a copy-protection on it. But normally EAC doesnīt care.
Never turn autoplay on, try ripping in secure-mode - and then if thatīs not working: try Burst mode. And first rip to wave - image (wave and cue) Later you can split this and encode to whatever you like)

  4. If you had autoplay enabled when you first inserted the disc it may have already installed software to block you from copying the disc. Remember when Sony installed a rootkit on some of their CDs?

I'm not saying this definitely happened to you with this particular CD, but it is a reminder of why you should NEVER enable autoplay on your CD/DVD drives.

A few years ago I bought a Spanish CD of the group Ketama. The CD cover said it had copy protection, so I thought it might be interesting to test EAC with it. This particular CD is really weird and EAC simply could not copy the first song no matter what I did. It got everything else, but I had to use an audio editor to separate some of the tracks as EAC ripped something like 5 or 6 songs as 1 giant WAV file. In desperation to get the 1st track, I used my mini disc recorder to record it in analog format from a CD player. I mention all that only to point out that it is possible to make CDs that can't be completely copied and you may have to resort to things like copying in analog mode somehow to get around it. Most CDs are not like the one I had or your Coldplay CD, but it is possible to get some that just can't be easily copied.
