Hello. I am a newbie, and I need some help in choosing a player for HD files. I have a 720p TV set and a standalone DVD player that works pretty well with DVD video, but I have also a lot of video HD files on DVD-R discs, 1280x720 pixel resolution, in DviX or h264 format. My player cannot play such HD files. Can those files on DVD-R be played on a Xbox or a PS3 console, changing video format if necessary? Which of the two consoles do you suggest to use them as media players, and do they have a HDMI output?

The 360 will play x264 on DVD, in high resolution. Only certain models have the HDMI connector.

Booth systems can stream the format too, the 360 can stream or play h264 in a mp4 container as well.
Currently there are NO plans to release a blue ray player for the 360, so if you ever get into thoes You'd need another player still. However the 360 is very widely support and works well. So the decision is reall a toss up.
I haven't done so in a long time but see if perhaps you can rent one if you have a rental membership to BlockBuster or Hollywood video, they use to rent the other consoles. Rent it for a week and try it out.
