  1. I have QTpro and I was wondering if there was a way to take the 5.1 audio from a quicktime file and create a 5.1 ac3 file for use in DVDlab.

    I've been using AC3Machine to encode exported waves fro the QT files, but it encodes it for DD 2.0.

    Thanks

    AC3Machine encodes to DD 2.0 because your wav is only 2 channel or it encodes to 2.0 even though your wav is 6 channel? If it is the first, then you can hardly blame AC3Machine.

    You could use mp4box/yamb to demux the aac, then convert with BeSweet or try ffmpeg to convert directly.

  3. Thanks for the reply.

    What am I demuxing? Do I still export the wav from the quicktime file or just use the .mov file? I'm using the spider-man 3 trailer as a test since it has 5.1 sound. I'm trying to get that 5.1 and turn it into a 5.1 ac3 file for use in DVDLab.

    You've lost me.

    "demux the aac"

    From yamb(superman_returns-tlr1_h720p):
    Code:

    So you want to demux/extract track 2.

  5. Thanks,

    I was able to get the AAC file using Yamb, but I can't convert the AAC to ac3. I tried besweet, but it just gives me an error.

    Looks like maybe BeSweet doesn't support aac. You would think someone would have written a faad plugin or something.

  7. There must be a way to convert AAC to AC3 without losing the 5.1.

    I got this program called Ease Audio Converter and it does convert to ac3 and when I put the file into DVDLab it does read as a 6 channel file. However, once I play the compiled VOB or burn it to disc, it plays as 2.0.

    QTPro ($29US). You should be able to export as WAV. The older (v6 or earlier) Quicktime architecture only supported 2.0ch, so you'll want to get v7. In the older, you could adjust vol. sliders to be able to export each channel, if you so desired. I would think that v7 would allow you do a similar thing with the 5.1ch. (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't forked over the cash for v7Pro yet).
    You would export each ch as wav (most likely: 16bit, 48kHz, LPCM, mono), so that you end up with 5 or 6 separate WAV files. Then use BeSweet, etc to convert to AC3.

    You could use faad or similar to decode to wav for free. Also once again ffmpeg should be able to convert directly. You would want to use a fairly recent ffmpeg build though as I recall having problems with 5.1 aac/mov's in the past.

  10. I've got QT7pro, but I see no way to export all channels to wav. I can export the sound to wav, but it just exports one 2.0 wav. Is there an option I'm missing?

    That's not what I meant.

    Try this:
    1. Open QT mov.
    2. See volume level balance controls panel. Stereo might look like this--
    Code:
    Volume L  [-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----]
    Volume R  [-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----]
    -or maybe-
    Code:
    Volume  [-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----]
    Balance  [-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----]
    You would set it 1st to:
    Code:
    Volume  [-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----]
    Balance  [||-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----]
    and export the left channel to wav.

    Then set it to:
    Code:
    Volume  [-----|-----|-----||-----|-----|-----]
    Balance  [-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----||]
    and export the right channel to wav.

    ...

    So for 5 channel, just extrapolate with the sliders and export 5 times. This only works if the sliders support this kind of adjustment, of course. So let us know what you see...

  12. This is all I see and I don't see any way to do what you suggested.

    And here are my export settings:

    ffmpeg.exe -i D:\Stuff\spider-man_3-tsr_h720p.mov -acodec ac3 -ac 6 -ab 384 out.ac3
    works, but I guess QT uses some non (compared to mp4) standard channel order, because the channel mapping is all wrong.

    No, that's not the place to set what I mentioned above.

    It's [Window | Show Movie Properties] (ctrl+J),
    Select "Sound" track,
    [Audio Settings] pane,

    The rest isn't quite how I was envisioning it, but close:

    For each Channel, there's a CH# & "Assignment".
    For Stereo, it would be Ch1-Left, Ch2-Right.
    For 5.1, it can be many ways, but should follow Dolby, MP4 or similar conventions, just for consistency.
    *NOTE*: Only QT movie & AIFF Saves/Exports allow multichannel output
    Therefore, if you have to use WAV, and don't have a multichannel audio app to convert AIF to WAV, then you should do the following...

    1. For each channel you want output, leave its channel alone, but set all the other channels to "Unused".
    2. Export to 1ch WAV.
    3. Repeat for each channel, re-setting its channel back to original assignment, but setting all the others to "Unused".

    Then you'll end up with 5 or 6 mono WAV files.

    It's painstaking, sure, but it'll do the job. No easier way around it,sorry.

    BeHappy will convert AAC to AC3. It also won'tt reduce the volume level of AC3 (which Besweet does). So far I have used it to transcode both 6ch AC3 and convert from 6ch wav to 6ch ac3 with very good results.

  16. Have you ever used BeHappy to convert an AAC? I keep getting an error when I try.

    "Error: Behappy.AviSynthException: Required Avisynth 2.5"

    I have Avisynth installed. I'm not sure what to do.

    No I have only used BeHappy on wav and AC3.

  18. Use YAMB to BELIGHT. Then you'll get a 6channel wav which I then have to lable correctly (because they come out incorrect) and then put them back together into an ac3.
