I've got a DVD which a friend burned for me, and every minute or so, the video freezes for about a quarter of the second before continuing - very annoying and offputting.
I ripped it onto my computer and started trying to find the problem. If I play the VOB files by themselves through VLC media player, the problem is gone. However, when they are played from a directory containing the VIDEO_TS files, the problem returns.

Is there any way I can fix this kind of issue without having to watch the DVD on my laptop, losing the menus and such by playing the VOBs singularly?

If you play VIDEO_TS folder in VLC, is it still there?
Try to load it into PgcEdit, if that software return any red marked commands?
Normally I would suspect cheep media, but if it is acting up playing from the folder, than that could be problem with .ifo.

But if it's the media, I don't understand why the problem persists when I rip the files onto my HD and play them from there.

    Thanks for the reply.
However, I'm a total dunce, so you're going to have to walk me through what to do with this program.
Where would I look for a command marked in red, if there is one?

Once you open PgcEdit, click on Disc icon and find and click to open VIDEO_TS folder.
Once there click on every line in left window. In large window you will get commands.
If any of them is wrong it will be red and you will have chance to correct it.
Also when you load VIDEO_TS folder, let PgcEdit go through the motions to fix what it want to fix.
I still have a feeling it is a bad burn, only what puzzels me is that individual VOB play fine.
If you can get Nero Speed (free) and check you DVD for errors with that one.
Problem come , that not all burners can acess all the features of that software.
