Alright, I don't actually know what muxing is. This is what happened.

I have my .avi movie file and my .srt subtitle file and a Media Player Classic. I read here that I need VobSub to make the movie play with subtitles, so I downloaded it. I opened SubMux, dragged the .srt into it and muxed it with the .avi file (I had no idea what I was doing), and now my .avi file no longer works. Instead of playing the movie it shows that it's 2 seconds long of a black screen. How do I make it work again?

What kind of AVI type file? You can't mux (Combine) subtitles with a video file using a format like Divx or Xvid, AFAIK. OGM or MKV I believe you can. For other AVI type formats, the .srt sub is just kept in the same folder as the video and the player looks for it there.

    And welcome to our forums.

Okay, so I was supposed to put it in the same folder. That answers my next question.

How do I determine the type of .avi file?

I also need to know if what I did is undo able or did I screw the file up for good and now I need to redownload it.

I don't think it's 'undoable', but anything is possible.

You can drop a video file into Gspot or Mediainfo and it will tell you what format (Codec) it uses for audio and video and whether you have it in your system. It will also tell you quite a bit more, such as running time, aspect ratio, bitrate and other attributes.

So you're saying that if you mux something wrong the entire movie file is ruined? Give it to me straight, I can handle redownloading it :P

You think if I drop the file into one of those it will tell me how to undo it/provide me with hints as to undoing it?

If you have deleted the source file (the one without subtitles), then yes it is ruined.
This is the lesson - never delete the source files until you are sure the resulted file(s) work as intended.

No, this is for identification. The problem is that .avi is a container - you don't know what you have inside.
Now the VobSub thing. In fact to play the video (.avi) with the subtitles as separate file, you don't need the entire VobSub package. You need only DVobSub (Directshow VobSub) filter installed. Recently this filter is called vsfilter. You can download it from sourceforge pages - look for guliverkli project

well then... good luck. And read the readme files.

    Hi,

I just donwloaded 625 mb of a video.
As my friend in this topic I made a submux in the hope of being able to watch the video with subtitles.
As my friend now I can only see 4 secs of video (black screen) and nothign else.
Is there a way to solve the mistake or undo de submux operations (even by hand editing the .avi with an hex editor ??) thank you
