hi,
I'm looking for a video tool for mac os x(free if possible) that gives me the possibility to crop 4:3 or 16:9 without unscaling the image that would just add black bars to the video and keep the aspect ratio.
thing is i wanna burn a video onto dvd but when i use ffmpegx and put it 16:9 720x480 to create a video_ts it screws up the scaling and doesnt crop, it enlages the image to fit the frame.
my source format is 608x336 but i want it to be full screen on a 16:9 hd tv which is 720x480 with black bars if necessary.
it could be a tool in a more complete video program or a simple application that does only that.
i googled and i read many forums but i haven't found a way to do this

Your source file is very close to 16:9. You only need to letterbox 1.7% vertically; that is 8 pixels on a height of 480. Perhaps your source file is 1.7% off, and you don't need to letterbox at all for perfect 16:9.
1/ Open your source file.
2/ Set the DVD preset.
3/ In the Video tab, set Autosize to "DVD 16:9". This will flag the MPEG-2 video to display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, even though the resolution is 720x480.
4/ If you want to letterbox, do so in the Filters tab, by entering the numbers 4 4 0 0 in the letterbox fields.
5/ Encode.
