i have been using winavi v8 for quite a while now and convert my avi's to dvd and then burn them to disc with no problems up till recently...

i have recently used a player called vlc and this has worked well but i notice that every file i look at has the vlc file extension attached, so no more does it say vob this and vob that it just has vlc extension....now if i play the avi it plays with sound perfectly , but if i convert to dvd with winavi then there is no sound at all, just pure silence...it has been working successfully in the past with these vlc extensions but now i get no sound, anyone out there got any ideas.

i have just removed from add/remove the program vlc tho it does not seem to have helped..

many thanks from a newbie for any help ty

The extension hasn't changed. You have extensions hidden and are just seeing the associated program (in this case, VLC). Open windows explorer and click on Tools -> Folder Options -> View, and untick "Hide extensions for know file types", then OK. You will see that they are still .vob files.

Frankly, I have no time or respect for WinAVI. It has shown itself over many versions to be unreliable. I know it has it's fans, but eventually all of them end up here saying "It has always worked for me, except this once . . . "

My advice is to try something (almost anything) else. My preferred alternatives would be FAVC (free, much higher quality), DVD Flick (free, higher quality, faster than FAVC) or ConvertXtoDVD (not free, faster than DVD Flick).

You might also use g-spot to look at the format of the source files and to see what is in the VOBs WinAVI created.

Finally, you should try contacting WinAVI support to see if you can be the first person in it's ignominious history to actually receive some.

VLC doesn't add any extensions. It may change the icon to the VLC 'cone' but that's just showing that VLC is the default player. You can change that to any other player in the files 'properties' menu. The file itself is unchanged.

You are about the third member in the past few weeks with similar WinAVI audio problems. I'm wondering if they updated the program and messed something up. BTW, WinAVI isn't too popular around here because problems like you are having are fairly common with the program.

But drop the WinAVI file into Gspot 2.70 and see if it's really missing the audio. It may just have audio in a format you don't have a playback codec for. Are you playing the DVD on a set top player or your computer? VLC can decode AC3 audio, which other players may not be able to without adding a AC3 codec.

    And welcome to our forums.

Every second release on version 7 had a flood of users landing here complaining about crashes or missing audio or audio sync problems. Version 8 users have so far claimed it to be more stable, but I suspect you are right - this is a new release and they are back to their old game.
