I USED to be able to find if a channel was 5C encrypted in one of the status pages, but I can't find it anymore. (???)

While it's, on, pressing power then enter really quick, gets you to the status pages.

ONE of these pages used to list the current channel's 5C encryption status. Anyone know which one it is? I thought it was "current channel status" but I can't see any variable in there that tells me if it's encrypted.

    AAahh.. THAT'S why.

Mine says: 5C IMPLEMENTATION = NO

Then under CURRENT CHANNEL STATUS I have the values:

    CCI: 0x02
    DRM: 0x00

^^ both of those need to be 0x00 for it to be showing as unencrypted.

I believe a few months back it would show as a "1" or "0" under "5C IMPLEMENTATION, but that has changed and instead of a 1 or 0, it now says "NO" - that's what was causing the confusion. So I now have to use the other method to check.

    THANKS JIM !!

    IMPORTANT UPDATE !!

It seems like that Wikipedia page is not entirely correct!

A channel in my HD listings: SunTV (ch.280 on my Cogeco cable channel) is showing:

    CCI: 0x00
    DRM: 0x01

This *should* mean it's encrypted according to Wikipedia - yet I just tested it by capturing via firewire using CapDVHS - and it captured FINE!

    ???

Wikipedia says BOTH CCI and DRM values have to be showing 0x00 for it to be unencrypted.

I just checked another channel (ABCW-HD) - same values (CCI 0x00 DRM 0x01) and it also captured fine through firewire.

    ????????????

    And Wikipedia says:
If the "RC Flag" (Redistribution Control Flag) has any value other than "0x00", then the Broadcast Flag has been detected and the Firewire output is encrypted as a result.

    Ch.293 here (WGN-HD)
    CCI 0x00
DRM 0x01 <- means encrypted according to Wiki
    RC Flag: 0x00

    - records with no problem via firewire / CapDVHS

-- the RC Flag is 0x00 for all the HD channels (both the ones I CAN record from via firewire, and the ones I CAN'T)

    Ch.275 (SCOHD)
    CCI 0x00
    DRM 0x01
    RC Flag 0x00
    - records through firewire

    Ch.279 (CITYHD)
    CCI 0x02
    DRM 0x00
    RD Flag 0x00
    - does NOT record via firewire

    PBS-HD
    CCI 0x02
    DRM 0x00
    RC Flag 0x00
    - does NOT record via firewire

So it seems the pattern is... CCI alone determines if it will record. because as I stated earlier in this thread:

    Ch.280 (SUNHD)
    CCI 0x00
    DRM 0x01
    RC Flag 0x00

    - DOES record via firewire (even though DRM is not 0x00).

Someone needs to update Wikipedia! (hehe...)

Hmm, interesting. I haven't played around with it as much as you have, though Although I do have a channel or two I want to check, just need a "safe" time to check since accessing the diagnostics menu on my box causes a re-boot and I don't want to miss any scheduled recordings.

There's a VERY LONG thread at AVSForum about recording via Firewire on the Motorola (and other) boxes - maybe there's some up-to-date info.

Wow you weren't kidding about the "LONG" part

I've bookmarked it and will try to get through it all in due time.

    Thanks again!

FWIW, I checked a channel I had been trying to record saved shows from, but were coming out garbled/encrypted:
    CH 473 (VH1 Classic)
    CCI 0x00
    DRM 0x01
    RC Flag 0x00

This channel does not record (from the DVR) via Firewire, as per the Wiki. I'll have to try a "live" recording, just to see if it's a saved-to-DVR issue.

I was able to successfully record another channel (Nat Geo, Std. Def) from the DVR, but I don't recall the encryption flags status.

    Hmmm......

I read somewhere that there is a "record once only" flag within the encryption that can be used. So if you've recorded it to DVR, it will not be able to be recorded again.
