    Needs more specifics

There are a few ways of transfering data between systems

    A: Basic network
B: Flash drive / external hard drive
C: cd/dvd (depending on availability of burner) (I use a usb external)
D: A drive adapter (to connect laptop drive to pc system) (some disassembly required)

You choose which is the most applicable and easiest method

Also, PC to PC USB transfer cable, like this:

    http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=BLU-USB20-DL&cat=CBL&cpc=CBLbsc

It assumes that you have functional USB ports, perferably 2.0. I have used it with 1.1 ports but we are talking a long transfer time them.

    Hope this helps!

Occasional use, for files up to 1 or so GB, a USB thumb drive is convenient. If you're doing it regularly, you should do it via the network -- ethernet cable or Wifi, takes bit longer to set up, but then is painless.

If both have firewire ports, which now a common feature for both desktops and laptops, you can run a firewire network between the two.

The USB transfer cables are also very good.

  6. Hi All,

    Cheers for the replies.

I've tried ethernet cable and to set up a basic network, but the 2nd hand lt doesn't have XP disc, and the pc doesn't seem to find the lt.

I'll give the usb cable ago when I can get my hands on one.

    Cheers again.

To be honest, I have no idea what you are trying to say with that sentence, however if you are trying to connect two PCs directly with ethernet you may need to use a crossover cable, not a standard ethernet cable. These are wired differently to a standard cable.

  8. Hi GS,

I've tried to use the ethernet cable which connects me to the internet between the two computers. The main computer, pc, seems unable to find the lt.

Again, I think I'll try the usb cable when I can.

    Cheers

As guns1inger mentioned there are different types of ethernet cables. The ones that hook a computer to a broadband modem are patch cables (generally). In order to hook up a pc to pc through lan cables without a router you need a "crossover" cable. As mentioned previously they are wired differently so they can talk to each other without a router.
