  1. Hi,

I transfert my dv tape with Windv to encode it to DVD but I'd like to improve some things.

First on this picture on the right, I say a blue vertical "halo" between the wall and the sky:

And also the red seems to saturated:

What avisynth filters do I need to try to correct that ?

My camera was set on Automatic mode for all.

    Thanks a lot.

You're seeing the limits of 8 bit video. You just don't have enough levels of gray to handle the center screen and that sky. The red can be toned down with filters. The sky can be replaced with a simple luminance key.

If you were shooting with a Sony VX2100 the "knee" would have avoided that clipped sky. As it is it must be fixed in post.

You can see here that the sky is hard clipped to 255. That makes it easy to replace.

  3. What settings do you recommend me for the red ?

How can I add the new luminance key for the sky ??

I use traditional video tools. I'll let others comment on best avisynth filters. If you use an HSV filter, just adjust S down.

The goal is to draw down saturation on the red.

Traditional movie technique would have called for a neutral density filter for this shot to "stop down" that sky. That would have risked making the dark areas noisy or underexposed. The movie guys would then call for the multi KiloWatt Klieg lights to light the front of that church.

Most people think lights are needed at night. Those who go to Cinematography School learn that lights are really for reducing contrast by altering the black level.

Colormill will help you get a better balance back. I don't know of any keying filters for virtualdub, but the likes of Vegas or Premiere have the ability.

Because of a bad tape ?? The camera was often showing "head cleaning required" with only this tape. My other tape was not showing the error.
