.....never mind,
I just converted the movie to DVD format using DVDFlick. Now everything looks fine.

DVD-Video subtitles are bitmaps, DivX subtitles are text.
I've read there exist standalones that support the .idx+.sub
formats for DivX playback, but they still are uncommon
(and more expensive too, I'm afraid).

Apparently, the chipset MediaTek MT1389FE is idx/sub~capable.
