I just bought a Philips DVP 5982 and other than the choppy playback of Xvids with packed bitstreams (hopefully a firmware upgrade will fix that), I thought it was working fine. But I just discovered something weird. If I'm playing a DVD and hit the reverse search button the search proceeds at the proper speed, 2x, 4x, or whatever I've chosen. However, if I play an Xvid, and hit the reverse at 2x speed it actually reverses at 8x instead. I haven't checked the other reverse speeds, but none seem to be any slower than 8x. It's pretty annoying when you've missed a piece of dialog and you want to take it back a few seconds and you end up a lot further back than you wanted. The forward search works fine. I can't find any mention of this problem, but I thought I'd check here on the off chance it's a quirk of this model and not a defect in my particular player. No big deal to return it, but I noticed that the return lines at Best Buy tend to be really long this time of year.
