I need to transfer some Mini DV to my PC and convert the files to MPEG-2. My PC does not have a Firewire connection. Can I use a Firewire to USB cable?

Never seen such a beast, but the short answer is probably not. The protocols are different, and while it is possible to transfer DV at full res via USB2, it requires drivers specific to the camera, which you won't have because the camera is a firewire device. Firewire cards are very cheap (sub-$20) so that is the better option.

There is such a thing but it is cr@pola to say the least (converts DV to MPEG-1). And it's much more expensive than a FireWire card!

Firewire PCI cards are pretty cheap. You can get them combined with USB sockets for a little more.
