What freeware can i use to copy dvds onto my macbook then burn them to play back on anything.

Imgburn works perfect for me on windows but i need a mac program that works in the same way (copys video TS or Img file) then i can convert that to ipod format or burn to dvd.....

Plz help as i really need this as my mate wont let me borrow heroes but i can take my laptop to his house and copy it that way, im waiting to buy season one on bluray next year as i have a PS3.

Can i use Disk Utility in my macbook to do this for playback on my ps3/dvd player?

I wish they wuld jst make imgburn for mac...

    Thanks in advance!!!

No, your only option is to go to
    www.ripdifferent.com, join the forums,
and learn (read) how to donate to
get a copy of Mac The Ripper, more
commonly known around here as MTR.

MTR is the only solution that reliably can
rip a DVD to the Mac's HD, as it's maker
geezerbutts works very hard to keep
up with the constant shifts in DVD Copy
    Protection. NBC/Universal, makers of Heroes,
have encoded these discs with some strong copy protection,
that Disc Utility alone will be unable to handle.

Once you have donated and registered it,
you can then rip the DVDs to your HD,
and use any of the following to get it
    into a .mp4 file: MpegsStreamclip (semi-payware),
    ffmpegx (donationware), Quicktime Pro (payware)
    or VisualHub (payware).

An additional option is handbrake (free, and easy to use). It combines ripping and transcoding in one operation. Then burn with the software of your choice (Toast is the standard Mac choice; firestarter is free).

    RobAdam:
A good way to tell if you have QT Pro is if in QT Player, your
    FullScreen Option is greyed out.
Also, on their Pro Apps, Apple also bundles with their QT Pro
the QT Mpeg-2 component, which is what you'll need to open
the .VOB files in the Video-TS folder you created by ripping the disc
    to the HD using MTR.

Eh? How about just opening the registration panel.
Also, as of QuickTime 7.2, full screen in QTP is unlocked.

You don't need MTR. There isn't any protection on it if it is a copy.

but handbrake only gives me options to rip to video format, can firestarter then burn the video file to disk?
    that easy?

i wish they would make imgburn/dvd dcrypter for mac its much easier, im going to use MTR and DVD toONEX whihc im not sure if i need or not but dont really wanna have to pay $50 for it just to compress files, when MTR's site says i dont need to do it anyway, but then in other areas says i DO have to compress the file?

THeres no way im buying any roxio product unless its gaurunteed 100% to work with everything caus ei bought EMC9 for windows and it couldnt even burn a dvd its was crap!

So with jst MTR, disk utility, and handbrake (for ipod) i should be able to make copys and ipod cpoys right?

I just need to knwo if i need dvd2onex, MTR's website says no initially then yes in the FAQ

Disk Utility might well work. Read the DVD to a disk image, option
CD/DVD master. Burn the DVD from the image.

MacOSX doesn't "do" the UDF format that DVDs use, but a byte-by-byte
disc copy should get around that little problem.

    RobAdam,
    Ok,
here's as simple as An answer your gonna get:

If the DVD your friend has is a copy, then no,
you do not need MTR and DVD2ONEX.

These two pieces of software are for Commercial
made ( read: store bought) DVDs, to enable
the owner to copy them to their HD or another drive
for playback (MTR), and to "shrink" the disc copy to
fit onto consumer brand media (DVD2ONEX).

A copy or Mac/PC made disc doesn't have copy protection,
so all that is needed is a simple "finder" copy to the HD,
or the use of Disc Utility to make an image of the mounted disc.

If you say, decide to go buy Heroes at Wal-mart, and want
to make copies to take on the road/plane with you, then
you will need MTR and DVD2ONEX, to circumvent their
copy protections/ and shrink them to a smaller size.

Hopefully, that clears up any confusion on MTR vs. Disc Utility.
Sorry for any confusion I or any others may have caused you.

I can't speak on Handbrake, because IMHO, Visual Hub
is so much better at getting content to iPod .mp4.
It's not a slam on HB, I used both, and found Visual Hub
to "fit" more into my workflow.

Once you copy the DVD to the HD using Disc Utility as Albloom said,
you can use what you got for free ( Hopefully QT Pro with the Mpeg-2
component) or get VisualHub, MpegStreamClip orother software
mentioned and get it into .mp4 for iPod.

Do you reckon using disk utility to create the image (which im not sure how to do but im sure its simple) does quicktime pro split them into chapters when i convert?

Or does visual hub split it into chapters?

when i use disk utility im no sure disk image is creates, im thinking an iso?

thanks for the help dude, very helpful!

    U R Welcome.
    8)
Disc Utility will create an ISO yes.
Just open Disc Utility, select File-->New-->Image from Folder
    select the Mounted DVD
    select where to save it,
    select the image format as
    None for Encryption
    click save.
Sit back and let it work.

When its done you have an ISO.
The ISO will be double clickable and mountable
    like a DVD.
DVD Player will even recognize it.

Visual Hub will not make chapters.
Nor will it chop the video into two smaller vids.
it will however, enable you to make adjustments to fit
the video into a smaller file size, if your worried
    about it being huge.

To split the file into smaller files, at the start of
the rip from MTR, rip by Title/Chapter Extraction,
    with "Chapters Merged"selected,
    and rip each Title separately.
That way you get each episode separate
    in its own Video_TS folder.

you then process these in Visual Hub, and you get
your episodes in separate .mp4 files.

Personally, I haven't had good results using Disk Utility (or the underlying hdiutil). It has created ISOs which when burned have not been recognized by all my players. In the end, I created a simple droplet (DVD Image Utility) which I can drop a DVD folder or a mounted DVD (unencrypted) to create a standard DVD IMG file. Finally, the IMG file can then be dropped onto DVD Image Utility to burn to blank media.

    download DVD Image Utility
