My HP notebook came with AOL 9 preinstalled. I uninstalled the program, but I am left with an AOL shortcut on my desktop and in My Computer window, that I cannot remove. One website suggested deleting in Safe Mode, but that didnt work. Will this require open-registry surgery? Anyone have this problem?

  2. Try running PC Decrapifier.

It has built in AOL uninstallers. Maybe it'll get rid of the remnants for you.

The icon should show up in the desktop folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\desktop). You should be able to just delete it from there. (It may also be listed under your user name and/or Administrator)
