My HP notebook came with AOL 9 preinstalled.I uninstalled the program, but I am left with an AOL shortcut on my desktop and in My Computer window, that I cannot remove. One website suggested deleting in Safe Mode, but that didnt work. Will this require open-registry surgery? Anyone have this problem?

Try running PC Decrapifier.
http://pcdecrapifier.com/
It has built in AOL uninstallers. Maybe it'll get rid of the remnants for you. -
The icon should show up in the desktop folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\desktop). You should be able to just delete it from there. (It may also be listed under your user name and/or Administrator)
