I want to cut off the top and bottom black bars to encode some of the .avi(that already has the top and bottom black bars by it self) to DVD, i use the "Cropping" in TMPGENC XPRESS 4, if i put the "value" to cut out the bars a little bit less then a little bit of the original black bars is still shown, but if i put the "value" a bit higher, then a bit of the main movie is cut off, is there anyways that i can crop it perfectly?

If cropping the bars off means an aspect ratio of more than 1.778 : 1 then encoding for DVD will put some bars back. A very common format for feature films is 1.85 : 1, which is slightly wider than 16:9 and requires small black bars for authoring. Wider formats will require larger bars.

so should i crop it a bit "more" or "less"?

my purpose is to have it in 16:9 resolution with black bars on top and bottom, but my original video already has the black bars but if i leave it like that (without cropping) then the picture looks more "compressed" when I convert it because it will have double black bars on top and bottom............so thats why i want to crop it first before i do the converting

    Hi...

First is your source a .avi file in 4:3 letterbox format and you want to encode it to 16:9 format ?

If so cut the black bars at the top and bottom so the video picture has got the values 720x404 pixels.

This is 1.78:1 format. If the black bars is totally cut out leave apprx 10 pixels on both side because
the overscan of your tv set will not show this area and in this way you will not lose any picture.

When the cuting is done rezie the picture to (PAL) 720x576 (NTSC) 720x480 and encode the video
with the 16:9 flag set, else the picture will look strange when you view it on your TV set.

    stars....
