I used mydvd studio 6 to encode dv video to dvd. the dvd video has horizontal lines when motion occurs. It almost appears to be shifting "slabs" of existing video by 1-2% of screen width. I edited the dv into avi clips before importing.Would this matter?

You've been here since 2001 and have over 3000 posts, so can I assume this is something other than normal interlace lines? How about a screenshot?

They would seem to have to do with interlacing.Normal? i dunno? I dont like it if it is normal. I dont see it with my other dvds made by the same process. I will post a pic when I get home.

3000 posts?Well, those were all OT.

2001?I'm still posting in the newbie section.

Here is what interlacing normally looks like:

If it's only prevalent around motion then I would suggest that it may be to do with field order.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If it's DV make sure you're using bottom field first.

    Whoa..my first POST.....yea!!!

anyway, im having the same prob with Mydvd8. If i export the project to Mpeg....it plays fine (no lines when panning) and (just burning it to a DVD) apears fine on TV. But if i use MYDVD to burn a disc, with menus, chapters yadda yadda.....it streaks with every motion.

im hoping that someone can help with this, so i will be following your post.....good luck to us!

It sounds to me like MyDVD is re-encoding after authoring and getting the field order wrong. Are there any settings to change the field order?

mydvd is so "user freindly" that it doesnt let you adjust settings like that. im guess its one of those...if it works, it works ....kinda programs. im prolly gonna scrap it and try other software eventually.

Each frame of interlaced video contains half of two separate pictures. Each half picture was taken at a different point in time. When you watch this on TV you see only one half picture at a time, first one, then the other. The field order determines which of those pictures you see first.

Some media players will deinterlace on-the-fly, some won't. Or are you talking about a set-top DVD player?

No. Media Center on a Vista machine. Can I get a codec for this?

That's the problem then. A computer monitor is progressive and displays each field as a frame, a TV is interlaced and displays as it was intended to be. A DVD on a pc monitor usually looks pretty horrible at the best of times. PowerDVD does a reasonable job of displaying interlaced TV footage but it still isn't as good as the cheapest set top player and a TV. This of course assumes that PowerDVD will run under Vista, it seems there's more software that won't than will.
