  1. I've had a Philips 642 for a while...it was fun when it came out but it really is a sub-par player. I also bought a new 40" LCD and was looking for a nice upscaling dvd player with divx playback.

The Oppo players have really caught my eye and I think I'll save up for the mid-rage one (169). Just wondering if anyone knows whether the player supports HD divx files?

It does not. That's has kept me from buying one, although I suspect that in a few more months I'll just give in because the ability to play DVD-Audio and SACD discs is worth it to me.

Sadly, you can count on one hand the number of devices that support HD Divx at this time. I cannot stress this enough - if you go to look for something that can play HD Divx or similar HD video files, be sure and research it thoroughly and look for reviews before buying. For example, there is a Dlink streaming media player that looked really promising, but after reading some reviews I decided against it because the bit rates it supports for non-DVD files are too low. For example, it will play HD MPEG-2 files, but only at bit rates of 6000 Kbps or less, which is just ridiculously low for HD MPEG-2. The Avel LinkPlayer or LinkPlayer2 by I-O Data might work for you. This player might also work:

    but it's not cheap.

Hasn't HD-DivX already been superceded by H264 in any case?

  7. Very interesting. I didn't realize how incompatible most players are. I was wondering about H264 as well..but already saw in another thread that it would be a while before 264 players were out. I'm mainly just looking for a quality upscaling DVD player (since the HD/Bluray war looks like it's far from over..) with Divx, and I love the USB flash drive feature. That's going to save me a TON of blank discs.

My first DVD player was by far my favorite, it was a sony from around 1997 and was rock solid. Great tray, great remote, easy navigation, and continues to play discs that my samsung and philips fail to play. And it's 7 years older than they are!

That's essentially what I'm looking for..I've read such good things about the oppo. What would you guys recommend?

HD-Divx takes a ton less processing power than H.264 does. H.264 is still bleeding edge. Even PC playback can be problematic at 1080p for all but the top end of current PCs. HD-Divx in theory could easily be supported by chips that are available now, for those who want to do it. Chips that support H.264 are in their infancy at this time. The Dlink streaming media player I mentioned does support H.264, but the reviews are not glowing. Bit rate limitations seem to make this player a bad choice for all but the most adventurous and least demanding of consumers. I'll be surprised if anything in any type of standalone player available this year has what most would consider to be adequate H.264 support.
