I am a video collector first, and a techno junkie second, so I am easily confused by video playback problems. My Oppo DV-951HD (connected to my TV via HDMI) has been very forgiving so far with my motley crew of DVD-Rs, both in NTSC and PAL formats. Up until now, any skip or freeze-up could be easily remedied by copying the disc with Nero Express, using a slower speed and a better brand of DVD-R. However, I have recently encountered a playback issue with a particular disc that Nero cannot fix, nor can I begin to explain the cause. Any suggestions of how to troubleshoot this problem would be greatly appreciated.
The disc is a region 0 NTSC DVD-R, obtained from a fellow collector along with 5 other DVD-Rs that played perfectly fine. On a hunch that it was a bad burn, I asked her for a replacement copy, but it turned out to be no different than the first one. On this disc, the video and audio both play fast, like it's fast-forwarding with the audio on. The video jumps, like it's skipping frames, but the audio is uninterrupted, except for the fact that it's high-pitched and fast. My Oppo player is currently set to the Video 2 mode, for what it's worth, but it plays no better in Video 1. In my computer, oddly enough, the DVD plays at the proper speed, albeit a little choppy, but it's an old iMac, so it tends to play DVD-Rs a little choppy.
So what I'd really like to know is, is there a way to make the Oppo play this disc at the right speed, or if nothing else, a way to copy or remaster the disc to eliminate the problem? Even just an explanation of the root of the problem would be a big help. Thank you.

    #1 - stop using Nero.
If you have access to a PC(I know squat about Macs), this "collector" will gladly throw some suggestions your way.

Thanks for your quick reply. You don't have to tell me twice to steer clear of Nero. I t definitely won't solve this problem. And yes, I do have access to a PC. I have two at work, one of which had the Nero software pre-installed. So please, indulge me with your ideas. Thanks!

First thing I would do is try to make one giant MPEG file out of that trouble DVD.
    VOB2MPEG is my preferred weapon.

You should also run one of those VOBs through GSpot to tell us exactly what we are dealing with.

  5. I suspect the audio and or video on the disc is not encoded to the DVD spec (illegal frame rate, illegal audio sampling rate). Some players may handle that correctly, some not. A GSpot analysis will show this.

Okay, I downloaded the software you recommended. I will try to convert the DVD to a single MPEG file after work today or tomorrow. If this works, my brother has DVD authoring software (1Movie or iDVD) on his Mac. The DVDs he burns always play in my Oppo. I'll let you know how it works out, or if I have any questions using the software. Thanks again for your help!
