I have an ASF file that i really wanted to turn into a DVD.
It plays fine in WM player and Divx Player and shows a time of 47 minutes in total.
I tried to open in in the correct VDub version (1.3C?) and got an error message about corrupted parts.
I downloaded ASF Tools and selected convert to avi but then when i selected to play the AVI i got a pink / green messy screen with the audio in the back round.
This AVI file wouldnt open in other softwares like DIKO / vdub and caused them to lock up.
I downloaded EO video's trial and asked it to convert. It identified my source as 47 minutes long but as soon as i asked it to convert to AVI it started dealing with it as if it was 5 hours + and would estimate my output to be over 4 gig!!!.
I ran another EO test asking it to break my output into smaller parts which it did but when i ran the first part in DIVX player it was about 3 minutes of film which it identified at 1.5 hours long.
EO looks like my best bet so far but i could really do with knowing why it is messing up the file sizes. If it helps i have been trying to convert the full file audio and video together.
Thanks

Try 'basic repair' option of ASFTools, especially if your asf file doesn't allow timeline navigation at playback. Then use VDub1.4c, EO Video or TMPGEncXpress.

You could try SUPER. It says it can convert ASF files. The problem with the file size could be related to a corrupted file, bad indexes or just variable rate audio and video and the programs not being able to interpret the length.
Windows Movie Maker may be able to convert it, but not directly to MPEG. You would have to use an intermediate format like DV, then convert that again to MPEG-2. -
i tried the basic repair and got a file that i could load into vdub( i think it was 1.3c but i'll double check when i get home) i then tried to do direct stream copy of the full file to AVI but it stopped after about 2 seconds.
I then did the more detailed repair, loaded up vdub and it stopped after about 16 seconds.
I will download super tonight and have a go with that.
Thanks -
I don't think you will be able to do a Direct stream copy with Vdub to ASF. You would probably need to use full processing to a different AVI format such as DV or a similar low compression format. From that file you may be able to encode to MPEG. Or you may be able to frameserve the VD output directly to a MPEG encoder like TMPGEnc. But if SUPER works, that would be simpler.

EOVideo doesn't output DVD compliant MPEG2 files, nor can you frameserve with it. It's also slow, but sometimes it's the only thing that'll get the job done.
The latest version of VirtualDubMPEG2 might be able to open your ASF file, and frameserve it to your MPEG2 encoder.
If not, and your ASF is in a small resolution, say 320 X 240, then do a Basic Repair with ASF Tools, then use EOVideo to make a VCD mpeg1 compatible file, which your DVD authoring application should accept for DVD authoring. It will only need to change the sound from 44.1 to 48k to make it compatible.
If your asf is in a larger resolution (640 X 480 for instance), you could use ASF Tools to do a Basic Repair on your file, then use EOVideo on the repaired ASF file, convert it to AVI using a lossless codec such as huffy or langarith. This will make a very big AVI file, probably in the region of 10GB, but will minimise the loss of quality (usually asf files have very little quality to start with, so every little helps). You can then use this lossless.avi in your MPEG2 encoder to make a DVD compliant mpeg2, then delete the big avi file. -
i know this post is quite old but i have a similar problem with an asf movie.
its a mtv2 video mod version of "take me out" by franz ferdinand which is just under 4mins (~30MB).
i have k-lite mega code pack 2.2.0
the video plays fine in realplayer 10.5
im not new to converting videos but this one has me stumped.
i want to actually convert it for my ipod video using videora ipod converter.
so i first tried directly converting it with videora but 2mins into the conversion, the codec ffmpeg.exe crashed.
then i tried super v2007.build23 to convert it to avi (mpeg4-mp3). it did convert it but the output is just some distored image with no sound! and is half the size.
after which i tried loading the asf file in virtual dub 1.3c which gave me a "ASF: illegal object fragment flags 63 in packet at 1891 packet size = 3e80, pp =81b, send time: 0:08" error.
i loaded the video in asftools 3.1 and tried converting it to avi, pass 1 completed fine but pass2 went quite fast and gave the message "Error: No video frame found on this stream: #4".
even though it played fine in real player, i had my doubts that the file cud be corrupt.
so i tried to use a 'basic repair' in asftools to repair the video.
as soon as the repair started, it crashed saying "ERROR: Failed to set manual stream selection (hr=0xc00d002b)." and give a windows crash report for asfcut.exe
so now i really dont know what else to do?
can anyone plz help me either repair (if corrupt) or convert this asf in a standard avi or better yet, allow me to convert it for the ipod mp4/h.264 format?
if no then can someone gimme another file/format of the mtv2 video mods version of take me out?
thanx in advance.Additional DVD Player Specs:-
