  1. I capture (with a Radeon AIW/MMC7.1/Win98) directly to DivX 320x240 (and 400x300 occasionally), 1-pass-quality-based, post-processing=2. My main use for capture is recording and archiving to CD-R old movies off of TMC and similar programming. The results are quite satisfactory, except that when I run ithe DivX AVIs through VirtualDub for the purpose of reducing the size of the audio track with MPEG-3 compression (i.e. Citizen Kane crunched from 2.6GB down to 1GB just with audio compression). I wind up with the audio starting perfectly synchronized, but the as the movie plays, the audio will go out of sync. At first it is not noticeable, but it increases as the movie plays.

VDub's help files indicate that mp3 can introduce sync problems.

Is there a better codec that will ensure audio sync? I can take increased file size, but ADPCM doesn't show a stereo option.

Use these and you won't have any issues. You can get better size even by converting the audio bandwidth down...see below.

    DivX .avi Encoding Using VirtualDub
These settings / Procedure will also work greatly for any .avi or source clip to DivX .avi compressions.

    1. Make sure that you have installed both the DivX Codec and VirtualDub
    2. In VirtualDub, open the source clip.
    3. Under VIDEO, select COMPRESSION, choose the DivX Fast Codec, under the CONFIGURE box to the right, go in and specify 5 Keyframe Interval, and up the speed to 3000 kbps on the bottom slide bar.
    4. Make sure that the VIDEO settings are set for FULL PROCESSING MODE (default)
    5. Next for the Audio, choose CONVERSION, then choose 8000 by 16 Bit, Mono
    6. Again, Under AUDIO, choose COMPRESSION.
    7. Choose MPEG-Layer 3 Codec, then select the format of 8000 by 16 bit, Mono.
    8. Under AUDIO again, make sure that the mode is set to FULL PROCESSING MODE.
    9. Under FILE, choose save .avi and you're rolling......

For Audio I use wma 96kbps, 44.1khz and i get just as good quality as i would using MP3 128 kbps, 44.1khz

I don't know if I would reccommend this for audio a/synch but if your using Divx (for playback on computer I should say) then you might think about changing the framerate.
VirtualDub has an option for you to change the framerate so that the audio and Video durations Match. That might help since you'd only have to change the framerate by like .238 fps or something and you wouldn't see any noticable difference in playback speed.

    Hope this helps!...

  4. Thanks folks! I should have looked a litttle harder at the menu items and options in VDub.
