Can a 3 hour divx avi beconverted to vcd mpg format that will fit on one cd. The size of the divx avi is 579mb. What exactly is a divx anyway ?
Thanks

The answer to that question is NO.
For a compliant VCD, you can only fit 74min on a 74min disc and 80min on an 80min disc.
If you create a low bitrate XVCD, you will be able to fit more but definitely not three hours worth without significant loss of video quality.
"DivX" is a video codec based on MPEG-4. The original version (v3) was a pirate hack of a Microsoft ASF video codec so that it could be used in AVI files. There is a newer v4 DivX that is open source and apparently free from Microsoft proprietary code.
The DivX codec allow very high levels of video compression with still quite pleasing results (as evidenced by the 3 hours of video into 579 MB).
DivX generally does not make a good source file for S/VCD creation unless it is of very high quality.

this is correct.
I have been unable to put a movie onto 1 cd under 2 hrs without quality loss.
2 hr and 30 min is too much quality loss compared to the source.
The only way i can think of is to use either 99 min cds which is VERY uncompatible with MANY dvd players as they probably wont read past 82 minutes. -
Yes you can put a 3 hour movie on one cd. This is how too do it.
1.Use TMPGEnc 12a
2.Lode divx movie.
3.Go to Video> size 352x288 for pal or ntsc.
4.Go to Video >Aspect ratio :4.3 Display.
5.Bitrate: 700 kbit/sec.
6.Rate control mode: Automatic VBR (CQ VBR) setting.
7.Quality at 15 > Maximum bit rate 3000 kbit/ sec >ok.
8.Go to Audio > Sampling frequency 44100.
9.Bit rate 128 kbits/s.
10.Go to system >mpeg 2 Super Video CD (VBR) ok.
11.Go to Advanced>fit to frame (preserve aspect ratio) ok.
12.Then Encode it.
If you adjust the Automatic VBR (CQ VBR) Quality higher the files sizes will be bigger. And I have found out that the Automatic VBR (CQ VBR) is great become it can go up to 3000 kbit/sec when that is a lot of movement in the movie and when there is little movement in the movie it goes down to a low bit rate i.e. Quality 15.
I have captured movies from my digital box, the quality of is as good as DVD. when I capture a movie it can be 11gb, so when I compress it the quality is great. It works with DVD movies to but your DIVX movie will be ok.
Here is an example of one of my compress movies. Movie The last emperor 2hour 35 min from a DVD frameserved from dvd2avi to TMPGEnc 12a . Automatic VBR (CQ VBR) setting > Quality at 15 > Maximum bit rate 3000 kbit/ sec minimum bit rate at 0.
Motion search precision high quality (slow).
Audio at 112.
The movie was 755mb on hd. Burnt with Nero as a svcd ignore the the warning and burn it. It was 75 min and 58 ses long in the Nero window.
Example two Judge Dredd 1 hour 31min captured from digital box Automatic VBR (CQ VBR) setting> Quality at 25 > Maximum bit rate 3000 kbit/ sec minimum bit rate at 0. Motion search precision high quality (slow).
The movie was 686 mb on hd and 68 min long in the Nero window.
I have also put two audio tracks on a cd-r I used the mpeg tool> multiplex .
This is the best way to get a movie on one cd-r and no pixels.
The movies work fine on my Kiss dvd player. But it dust not always work on all dvd players . Good luck. -
Sorry I forgot to write about number 3!!!!

Firstly, this isn't a VCD or even a SVCD. You are fairly way out in XSVCD land.
Secondly, using that setting, you cannot predict the end size of the file. You don't want to have been encoding for a day and a half and discover that your MPEG doesn't fit on one disc.
Thirdly, that low a bitrate means that there is a good chance that parts of the movie will look like crap, especially if there is a fair degree of motion.

Actually Michael I don't think you've read Trevor's post properly. If you did you'd see that he's written that he's that the conversion is in auto-vbr.
I know this works because I know Trevor personally and I've played his 2:35 min films on my own dvd-player without trouble and with very good quality, not a pixel in sight.
So, he knows what he's talking about as he's actually converted about 50 films and they've all run fine.

Well very good for you but I know what I'm talking about as well and I believe that the experiences of hundreds of other members here would disagree with you on some points.
Now, if you think my last posts have any specific inaccuracies, then deal with that in detail.

What more is there to say, unless of course you're calling us both liars?
I've seen what he does, I've played the movies on my dvd-player and they work.
Seems pretty simple to me.....he's doing what you say can't be done.
"hundreds" of others or not, he's done it!

I am feeling a little skeptic as Virtualis is. Im not so much talking about it cant be done, but "very good quality, not a pixel in sight." is what Im finding hard to believe...
Can you please make up a template or upload a sample clip etc etc.
We all just want some proof.
Thanks.

Yes, I put that in the same class as seeing a pig fly past my house... Not impossible to be sure, but pretty darn unlikely. Thus, I put the onus on you (well, your friend) to show proof. Now he did so (admirably) in the method he used and I simply commented on that -- and I believe that my comments are factually accurate.
If they are not, please enlighten us all.

I tried out the method suggested and the end results are very unpleasing.
The words "not a pixel in sight" is extremely laughable in this case.
Perhaps I missed something though. Im not seeing how you can get over 2 hours onto an 80min CD with anything but poor quality.
I am really wanting to see a sample here.
