  1. downloaded free vob/mpg converter and seemed to work fine. Windows says file does not have "codec" required to play.

    GOAL
I have zero experience with video. I want to put video clips on my website. The video sent to me by TV station is vob, but my web editing program takes mpg, avi, wmv and mpeg. Getting the thing unpacked or converted on my old computer is the issue. I appreciate the opportunity try out this software before purchasing the full program.

    PROBLEM
VOB@MPG freeware downloaded well and the file conversion went off without any error messages. Windows says it cannot play the video file because there is no "codec." File uploaded to my website also does not play with windows media player, or real player.

I am in U.S. This isn't a British issue like the old VHS format incompatibility over the pond--is it?

    Any ideas?

You need a mpeg2 decoder to be able play it in wmp. Try ffdshow.

  5. thank you -- will get one. ffdshow did the trick and I am now able to view the video. It is too large to upload to my yahoo website, so I am editing it into a 10 minute clip for utube, which I will post and imbed in my site instead of loading on my site.

All this learning in one day!

  7. Hey gang....I was so glad to see this thread and it's "consistent" advice. So I downloaded the ffdshow and still no sound from the mpg files. Avi videos seem to be fine.
    Would love any help....
    thanks...

  8. What is the audio codec? Use GSpot or MediaInfo. Then enable that decoder in ffdshow. I'm guessing AC3.

  9. Hey Jagabo...
OK....I'm really grateful for your answer. I have some "holes" in my understanding of the "behind the scenes" world of codecs etc.

OK...downloaded the Gspot program and opened up a video that hasn't been playing (audio that is). It said the codec required was AC3 like you said but it also said it was installed?

  10. What program isn't playing the audio?

In GSpot, near the bottom left is a section labeled MS A/V. There are two little buttons under the label called 1 and 2. Press 1, then press 2. Does the video start playing with audio in the little media player window above? If not, what does it say in the window to the right of the MS/ AV label?

  11. Jagabo -

OK...opened file as per your directions:
    no audio
This is what was in the line to the right of the SM/AV

SRC -->>--A-->Mainconcept Adobe 2 MPEG demultiplexer>--b-->ffd show video decoder >--C-->video renderer

OK...I couldn't figure out how to copy paste this so it's not exact in terms of Hypens etc.
    Ack...thanks for your patience...

    thanks...

May i suggest installing ac3filter. Usually solves most "no audio" issues.
    SVCD2DVD v2.5, AVI/MPEG/HDTV/AviSynth/h264->DVD, PAL->NTSC conversion.
VOB2MPG PRO, Extract mpegs from your DVDs - with you in control!

  14. Did you enable the AC3 decoder in ffdshow? Start -> All Programs -> ffdshow -> Audio Decoder Configuration. Select Codecs at the top left. In the right pane find AC3 and use the pulldown to select libavcodec or liba52.

  15. Hey ChrissyBoy...wow...when did Buzz grow the sporting facial hair? LOL.
Anyway, Jagabo...thanks for the detailed description.
    Update:
My computer will now play the DVD's (in WMP) that I produce and sell (limited basis - hey - I teach people to train horses and while I'm very interested in computers, I do have gaps in the intricacies of video codecs knowledge).

This has changed since our last dialogue.
The videos I made will open in Windows media player.
They will NOT open with the software that accompanied the new drive (Nero).

I canNOT play a video from Netflix (OK...I got Shrek the 3rd) LOL)

I'm going to open up the desktop beastie tonight and put the setting to "cable" on the new DVD/CD writeable drive however I'm a bit reluctant to do this since it at LEAST played my own videos.

Also followed through on your advice to set the AC3 filter.
    thank you again
    Peggy

Commercial DVDs are encrypted and require a player that can decrypt them. Power DVD, for example. Or you can "rip" them to your computer, removing the encryption in the process. DVD Decrypter, DVD Fab, etc.

  17. Thank you Jagabo....like I said, there are holes in my knowledge despite that fact that I love computers.

So all of these questions are in preparation for a bigger task. I'm making and editing short training videos for horse trainers. I'm wanting to sell them online (short maybe 5 min. and cheap) I need to learn about compression etc. to make the files manageable.

I've had success making the videos in the past, but then upgraded the camera. My adobe software is not allowing capture now and their tech support is almost impossible. I hate to say it, but even I, with the 'holes in my understanding" know more about the process than their tech support right now.

So is appropriate for this section of the forum?

What camera did you have before? What camera did you upgrade to?
