  4. combine virtualdub with an avisynth script and you will be at least able to open wmv/wma files. To encode, very easy, just frameserve your virtualdub projet to Windows Media Encoder.

You can encode WMV3-video in an AVI container with
VirtualDub, or use WMVMuxer if you prefer the ASF way.

  6. Or try VirtualDub 1.3c which was the last version withWMV support -- before Microsoft threatened Avery Lee.

ha ha, That's a good one!
The latest virtualdub 1.7.7 has ability to handle .wmv with plug-ins by fcchandler the developer of VirtualDub MPEG-2, You can now just add his plugins to Vdub 1.7.7 and open .wmv and MPEG-2, without having to run a separate VirtualDub for each task.

    You're welcome.

There is also an ac3 input plugin but it only works in the experimental releases which have Audio From Other File instead of WAV Audio. You can input 5.1 mp3 and 5.1 ac3 audio and direct stream copy to get 5.1 surround in your AVI with the experimental releases.

VirtualDub-1.7.X-test6 is the version that I use.
