  1. Hi

I want to try recording a video clip of me playing guitar, and I'm using this tutorial:

    http://jaw.iinet.net.au/stuff/makevideo.html

My USB webcam has showed up under the "device" menu in Capture AVI mode., but no devices are showing up under "audio input" or "audio source". I am recording through a firewire interface that uses the ASIO driver. Does Virtualdub require a plugin to support the ASIO driver. I needed a plugin to get playback in foobar2000, so I was thinking maybe something similiar is needed in Vdub.

Or maybe I'm just do something wrong.

    Any ideas??

And just in case you don't know ASIO is a driver protocol used by many sound cards (especially in the world of computer music).

  2. I'll take recommendations for any other freeware video capture. I just need a demultiplex/multiplex tool with it. That's what vdub is great for apparently.

Your webcam has its own mic input (if it's a usual kind), and whatever driver that recognizes the cam also expects the audio to be coming from the cam. Using an app that supports the cam as input (such as one that came with it) means recording only the cam audio.

I assume your Firewire/ASIO audio device DOES NOT have video input, right?

Well, you could try 2 things:
    A. Record both of the above separately in their own respective home apps and then use an NLE to sync the audio with the video+audio, then throw out the webcam audio and save the result to AVI.
    B. Setup each record session and create corresponding captures graph in graphedit, then combine and modify them to merge/swap their audio, and save the result.

AFAIK, Vdub doesn't have any plugins that directly support ASIO.

  4. Hmmm I guess I'll have to go with one of those excessively-large, bloated commercial type programs like Pinnacle or Vegas. Thanks for that info. I had no idea this would be that complicated.
