  1. Hi, I'm a bit of a newbie.
My philips 622 was working fine, would play dvd roms and also my own personal backups a long as they were dvd-r.
Now it seems to have stopped working - it sometimes plays a few seconds then stops and normal tv comes back on.
All it says is "fts off" which I wouldn't imagine would have anything to do with it?
I have no idea what is wrong with it - any help would be appeciated thanks.

How old is your player? You should be aware that Philips has been reported to have terrible quality control problems with some of their models. I have the DVP-642 which has worked fine for me for almost 3 years. Others with this model have had it die within a month.

By any chance is your DVD player in a place with poor ventilation? You should be aware that the thinner models that today's marketplace demands often overheat. One of the reasons my player has lasted so long is that it has a lot of open space around it to keep it from overheating. Heat buildup can destroy your players. My brother learned a hard lesson when heat buildup destroyed his Sony DVD player because he stored a bunch of stuff around it in his entertainment center. He had to buy a new DVD player and how he keeps it well ventilated.

Today's DVD players are deliberately designed with cheap components to keep costs down and the thin designs make them prone to overheat, as I said, which makes them wear out quicker. Don't be surprised if you need to buy a new player. If you have gotten 2+ years out of your player, you've probably done well. If your player has a definite preference for DVD-R, it's probably 3+ years old and as such it may just be at the end of its useful lifespan.
