I wonder if there is a problem with Philips DL discs that I don't know about.

The question is that the percentage of coasters I am having is outrageous. Just now did I open a new 50-disc block, and the first two discs stopped during burning.

I have two different burners: a Plextor PX-880SA and an LG GP08NU20. Usually the latter seemed to be more reliable, but now I think the coaster problems I had were not burner related, but media related. Slower burning speeds didn't make any difference.

I use nero for the DL burning. OS is WinXP with SP3.

Is there anything I can do to get things better? Or what DL media is more reliable?

Everyone and their mother knows the only D/L discs worth buying are Verbatim.
    And Nero sucks....use ImgBurn.

There are many mothers which are ignorant then. Look at this list from Videohelp, ordered by compatibility:

    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?dvdmediasearch=&dvdmediadvdridsearch=&type=3&size=8....+or+List+Media

Verbatim is only in the middle.

Though I didn't know there were different Philips types.

Will give a try to ImgBurn. Thanks.

Verbatim DVD+R DL discs are the only discs that burn reliably. All other DL discs are inferior to Verbatim. Taiyo Yuden does make DVD-R DL discs but they only sell them in Japan so that's why we say to use Verbatim. Also ImgBurn is a lot more reliable for DL burning than Nero so use ImgBurn and buy Verbatim and you should be OK. Note that if you have several different speeds of Verbatim DVD+R DL discs available in Brazil, the 8x-10x discs cost a little more but they are the best. I burn those at 4x, but I don't get coasters.

OK, coincidence or not, my third burn try with Imgburn did work.

Just a little thing: where do you set the disc name and the recording speed in Imgburn?

Next time I will buy Verbatim, but first I will have to use the 47 Philips DL discs I still have.

Disc name is under LABELS tab(if burning folders).
Burn speed is under DEVICE tab(if burning folders).
Not sure about ISO image burning...don't have one handy right now.

I'm not doing ISO image burning on the DLs.

I use them to burn MKV files that are larger than 4.7Gb and smaller than 8Gb.

Disc naming an ISO is a slightly different process in ImgBurn...that's all.

There is one reliable substitute for Verbatim DL disks, though they can't be purchased at local shops. They are sold under the Falcon brand, and are made in UAE. Here is a thread that shows different online stores where you can purchase them if you are in the US: http://club.myce.com/f33/where-does-one-find-falcon-media-usa-314519/

This thread has a lot of user comments on the quality of the Falcon/FTI disks, both single and double layer: http://club.myce.com/f33/how-good-fti-falcon-271517/

It seems using Imgburn might have partially solved my problems.

Not a single coaster until now using the same Philips media.

    Thanks to all.

Now I how to find an affordable DL media. Verbatim seems to be a bit expensive everywhere. This Falcon media might be an option, if I can get someone to ship it to Brazil.

MID means Manufacturer ID code, which is included on all blank dvds. You can find it by using DVDIdentifier, or ImgBurn. In ImgBurn, click on Discovery mode and it will show up on the right side of the main window as Disc ID.

CMC Magnetics. Definitely not first-class media.

Sounds like somebody needs to learn more about DVD media: http://www.digitalFAQ.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm
That will get you up to speed.

CMC is definitely not high grade media.

    Well, you always learn something.

I did research DVD's quality many times, mostly using Videohelp's chart with user's comments and evaluation. Unfortunately I didn't read those digital rankings... which are not from Videohelp.

In any case I will pay very much attention to what I buy from now on.

Much of my purchase routine was also based on trial and error. Sony's DVDs (SL) are considered first class, but I had more coasters with them than with Philips SLs. Maybe Nero's fault.
