I have friends that say 16x is too fast and causes errors, and 8x speed is the way to go..

    Any truth to this?

I burn all my DVD's at 8x. Each person has a different opinion of how to burn. You need to test out yourself and see what works best for you.... I have done a few burns at 12x and 16x with Quality media....Good Luck

Personally, U believe you should burn at the rated speed of the disc, or the top speed of your burner - whichever is the lower. Of course this assumes that you are using good quality discs. Cheap discs will produce poor results no matter how slow you burn them.

12x is safer than 16x, even on the best media.

Using good media is the key.

If you're more patient, consider 6x, the max CLV/CAV speed.
    4x and 8x is fine.

Also assuming you're using 16x media.

For CD-R, no point to go faster than 16x-24x.

Though I've never had any problems burning TY 16X at 16X, I have recently changed to 12X, just in case.....

It's only a bit slower than 16X and 'may' be able to get a better burn.

On the other hand, I think it's ridiculous to burn 16X at 8X or, even worse, 2X. JMO. If I wanted to burn that slow, I would have bought cheap media.

I burn at maximum rated speed for the drive and the disk usually 16x on my desktop, 8x on my laptop. Recently been burning at 18x on supported media (principally Verbatim).

No coasters, no early failures on burned media, thousands of disks.

Caveat, all of my burns use LG Renassas chipset drives, your experience may differ, and based on comments on this and other forums probably will if you have a Pioneer, SONY, Lite-On, NEC or BenQ drive. It also will differ if you have a slow system or are performing other processor intensive tasks while burning.
