I have the latest VirtualDub (1.4.8)
I captured video with my ASUS V8200 Deluxe / Sound Blaster Audigy at 29.97 fps, 352 x 240, HuffyUV with sound at 44k, 16bit, mono.
The resulting avi file was about 2gb for the 13:42 minutes.
I extracted the WAV audio with VirtualDub, cleaned it up, and then compressed it to mp3. Then I tried to put it back in the avi.
I set video to direct stream copy, wav audio (selecting the mp3 file), and set audio to direct stream copy. I have done this successfully in the past, but not on this computer, so I know those settings should just multiplex the audio & video.
When I try to save as a new avi file, VirtualDub direct stream copies all the video, but doesn't process the audio at all.
I checked to see that audio & video were both 13:42 minutes, and I tried every possible way to get them together. I also tried to just let VirtualDub direct stream copy the video, and internally convert the avi audio to mp3, but that locks up every time when the audio filesize is 5424K. That seems very strange to me.
If there is another program that can multiplex DivX video & mp3 audio, please let me know, and I will give it a try. I can't seem to get VirtualDub to multiplex anything for me. I've tried every setting with a few different captures, and different video and audio codecs, but it never puts anything together. :(

http://www.doom9.org
click "Download"
download "wavemp3"
open it, click "Wave!" and select a mp3 file. it will save it as a wav file (think of it as a wav file that has a mp3 file inside of it)
you can "direct stream" it with virtualdub -
Here's what I did. Take my original avi, cut the sound with virtualdub to a wav file. Encode to mp3 with mp3 Producer. Use wavemp3 to make it a wav file. Then multiplex the audio back in using VirtualDub.
The resulting movie plays back just fine, with audio intact.
But when I put the new avi into VirtualDub, and check the File Information, it shows up as 44k, 0-bit, mono.
Is there a problem with it being 0-bit instead of 16-bit? -
i dunno whats up with that
*tests it*
