I searched all of the threads and cannot find a straight answer if it is possible to get DTS through a firmware upgrade on the 5960... Can anyone confirm if the 5982 has the option?

The player does not support DTS decoding. DTS decoding is hardware related, a firmware update will not "fix" it. The player should read DTS and forward it to your receiver, assuming your receiver has a DTS decoder.

I think the original poster's point was that some budget players are just feature crippled versions of their upmarket equivalent and that installing third party firmware can often restore those missing features?

There has for example been a hack which re-enabled SACD playback on a budget player though only in two-channel mode.

Which is understandable when a high price and budget priced player hit the market at the same time, however, the 5960 is a year older than the 5982. And hardware features typically aren't disabled just to make a budget player. They've already paid for the chipset (hardware) to provide the feature.
