DVD Shrink has been around quite a while, but IMO, there's no better freeware tool for backing up your own DVDs.
If you use RipIt4Me or DVDFab Decrypter before using Shrink, it will work with most any DVD, even the newer ones with Sony ARccOS encyption.
If you are using the program, here's a few improvements you might look into. http://www.dvdshrink.info/index.php Take a look in the 'Goodies' section.
You can set Shrink to automatically start up when you insert a DVD and you can change the icons in the program to something a little newer. Also, if you want to set ImgBurn for the default burning program, (Highly recommended) here's a way: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=55859
These mods also work with Vista.
